Firm Owner & Attorney
Matthew Felty graduated from New Mexico State University with a B.S. in Business Administration in 2001. After working in hospital administration at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Matthew decided to pursue a career in law, which he discovered an interest for late in his collegiate career. This interest quickly turned into passion after beginning law school in 2004. With a thirst for the minutia and inner-workings of the legal system, in particular, the criminal justice system, Matthew graduated from Appalachian School of Law in 2007, Magna Cum Laude, and number 5 in his Class.
While attending law school, Matthew achieved Book Awards (highest grade in the class) in Torts, Civil Procedure, Criminal Practice, and Conflicts of Law. Matthew was a participant in Moot Court and Law Review, where he was Managing Editor as well as Notes and Comments Editor. Matthew was awarded the “Above and Beyond the Call of Duty” Award in 2006 for his work on the Law Review. Matthew Was also Vice-President of the Criminal Law Society at the Appalachian School of Law from 2005-2006 and worked as a Research Assistant to Professor Priscilla Harris, who kindly credited him in her published article in a Women’s Rights magazine.
Also while in law school, Matthew did an internship for the Public Defender's Office in Columbia, South Carolina, and internship at the Legal Department for the City of Charleston, South Carolina, and also a brief, 6-week, internship for the Honorable Justice Cynthia D. Kinser, who later became the first female Chief Justice of the Virginia Supreme Court.
After graduating law school, Matthew spent the next two-years as a Law Clerk to now retired, Chief Justice Kinser. It was this experience that cemented Matthew’s passion for the minutia and inner workings of the law, in particular the criminal justice system. It was also here where Matthew was able to sharpen his research and writing skills to develop him into the fierce advocate he is today.
Matthew’s next experience in the legal profession was as a Commonwealth’s Attorney in Washington County, Virginia where he spent nearly three years prosecuting hundreds of misdemeanor and felony cases. Matthew never intended to pursue a career as a prosecuting attorney but knew that the experience could only make him a better Criminal Defense Attorney.
In January of 2012, Matthew joined Snodgrass Law Firm and has embraced his new career in private practice where helping people with their problems is what he does best. Matthew served as President of the Criminal Defense Bar of the 28th Judicial Circuit from 2015 to 2020. He served as Vice-President of the Washington County Bar in 2018, then as President from 2019-2020.
All of this experience lead Mr. Felty down the path to opening Felty Law Firm in 2023. As the operating attorney and owner of this practice, Mr. Felty finds he has gained more autonomy and the ability to truly serve his clients better than ever before. Since starting the private practice, Matthew has been able to put his experience of handling hundreds of criminal cases too good use. Ranging from traffic tickets to serious felonies in both State and Federal Courts, Child Custody and Visitation, or Personal Injury matters, Mr. Felty is able to get his clients results as a trusted legal advisor. Matthew has navigated complex criminal cases as well as complex civil litigation and defense cases in both State and Federal Court. Mr. Felty is a results-driven attorney who prides himself on working hard for every client. Matthew is committed to maintaining clear and effective communication with every client and WILL ALWAYS CALL YOU BACK!!!
